The world is cloudy …

… will a cloud never see the sun?

As usual, first I beg pardon to all my reader for my english.

Well, some days ago I read IBM has annouced it is leading a join reseach project. The initiative (which is EU-funded), called VISION, will setup a new powerful ICT infrastruture to support what I’ve understand to be a new model of data (www.visioncloud.eu)

The italian partner are Engineering, RAI and Università di Messina.

The words IBM, cloud and EU-funded have catched my curiosity, so I’ve decided to take a look at the VISION site, and try to understand the overall project objectives.

The site is poor in content, it explains some use cases and reports the main information about partners and the code of the EU Programme. But for me the big news is the EU gives money to work on the reference architecture for the cloud and to support new services, and, in my opinion, new ways to provide old services.

I’ve tried to understand something more about EU research projects and initiatives, I started from http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/workprogramme-2009-10_en.html to recognize the project code:

  • FP7 : Seventh Framework Programme
  • Objectives 1.2.: Internet of Services, Software and Virtualisation

Well, one year ago EU was thinking about something like cloud, and the work programme (and related fund) for 2011-2012 are more explicit about cloud:

Objective ICT-2011.1.2 : Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/workprogramme-2011-12-obj1-2_en.html ). The budget for research projects is about 68 Mln€.

Cloud Computing became a “target outcome”, with expected result in the range of intelligent infrastructure management, interoperability and enhanced virtualization.

What does it means? If someone has any idea, please let me know, I’ll think about it and will publish soon a new post (maybe in italian).

Have a nice week !
